This is very import to learn so you don't confuse this "Tail" with other large and small buteo (large soaring hawk) species in our west coast region. Such as the Red-shouldered, the Broad-winged, the Rough-legged, the Ferruginous, the Swainsons Hawks and even other hawk species such as the Coopers Hawk and the Northern Harrier. a good study is to check the tails of all the birds I mentioned and check them against this Red-tailed in the photo.
