The City of Galt, in collaboration with the Cosumnes River Preserve and Galt Joint Union Elementary and High School Districts, is pleased to bring you the 12th Annual Winter Bird Festival on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Our festival guests will enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Cosumnes River Preserve and the incredible opportunity to catch sightings of waterfowl, shorebirds and wildlife in their winter habitat. Festival headquarters provide a starting point for exclusive preserve tours, educational presentations, wildlife shows, art displays, wine walk, hometown history and hands-on activities. This is a winter celebration you'll always remember!

Ø  10:00 am Wild Things & Conservation Ambassadors, Gabriel Kerschner

Meet our wildlife ambassadors!  Back by popular demand, these wild creatures have sustained injuries that prevent them from surviving in the wild or were kept as illegal pets.  The Conservation Ambassador team delights tens of thousands of school children every year with a message of conservation and appreciation for the earth's natural wonders.  Join us in welcoming these animal ambassadors and learn about each one's special place on earth.
 
Ø  11:00 am Backyard Bird Safari, Mike & Annette Heacox, Luciole Design Inc.
Mike and Annette Heacox of Luciole Design Inc., landscape architects based in Sacramento, return with more secrets on how to design and enjoy your ultimate bird/wildlife garden. Learn which bird species have a preferred time for taking baths in sum- mer, design and create a simple water feature for birds, attract birds year around with the right mix of low water plants, and discover through the seasons the best time of day and location to observe birds and wildlife.
 
Ø  12:00 p.m.  Keynote Speaker, Larry Broderick
Larry Broderick's fascinating and visually-exciting presentation includes not only wonderful first-hand stories from the field, but also is packed with interesting information about raptor habits, identification, and suggestions of where to spot them, as well as some interesting one-of-a-kind and rare special surprises. Once you attend Larry's presentation, you have him as a resource and reference for questions and outings for years to come, as he is highly accessible through West County Hawkwatch Raptor Research's webpages and his direct contact information.

Larry Broderick is a local Birds of Prey Natural History and Interpretive Specialist, Jenner Headlands Hawk Watch Director and Certified California Naturalist. Larry has been working with Birds of Prey as an educational specialist for over 25 years. For the last 10 years he has led walks, hikes and presentations with Solano and Sonoma Land Trusts, Madrone Audubon, Bird Rescue Center and Redwood Regional Ornithological Society. Larry conducts Bird and Wildlife surveys for the Wildlands Conservancy, Sonoma Land Trust and Pepperwood Preserve. He also runs West County Hawkwatch and manages dozens of docents, photographers and tour guides. Larry is the recipient of the Madrone Audubon's 2012 Betty Burridge award and Sonoma Land Trusts Special Recognition of Volunteer Service award 2015-2016.

Director Kelli Moulden's mission is to inspire respect for local and migratory birds through customized and entertaining educational programs.  Enjoy a fantastic opportunity to see and experience hawks, owls, and water birds up close and personal.  Yes, the birds are coming to visit!

 Ø   2:30 pm Cal-Waste Recovery Systems Materials Recovery Facility Tour, Leesa Klotz
Take a guided tour through our Materials Recovery Facility.  See what we do and how we do it.  Each day we recover discarded natural resources destined for landfills, conserve natural resources, create new jobs, and reduce local carbon footprint.  Our goal is to preserve our environment and build a better future for our community and the lands and waterways that surround it.  Good for all ages, Kids' activity will be included during your visit.

Get a close up view of bats and learn about the importance of inviting them to your yard or farm!  With years of experience, Corky will delight you with her extensive bat knowledge!

These games are sure to activate your senses, sharpen your awareness, and bring a smile to your face! Have fun playing games that teach about animals, trail etiquette, and natural phenomenon. Run, hide, dance, sing and sit beneath the trees while laughing, learning, and creating happy memories.   Open to all ages and limited space available.  No cost.

Aaron will be discussing the role of the hunter community in wetland and waterfowl conservation, showcasing the role that dogs play in conservation.  You will get to witness "Tess" the amazing (slightly crazy) retrieving water dog as she plunges in the Gora Aquatic Center Pool to demonstrate her retrieving skills!
